Myanmar Chapter

Free literacy programs in Myanmar — remote education and support for communities in Yangon and conflict-affected regions.

Understanding the Need

Challenges

Civil War & Institutional Instability
Since the 2021 military takeover, thousands of teachers and students joined the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM), refusing to participate in junta-administered state schools. Curfews, checkpoints, militarized zones, and safety risks make commuting to physical classrooms hazardous.
Monsoon Floods & Infrastructure Damage
Heavy rains frequently submerge low-lying townships, damaging school structures, turning roads into impassable waterways, and forcing schools to shut down or serve as temporary relief shelters.
Diarrhea & Cholera Outbreaks
Floodwaters contaminate municipal and street-level water supplies, leading to sharp spikes in acute diarrheal diseases and hospitalizations. Prolonged illness directly causes chronic student absenteeism, malnutrition, and cognitive fatigue.
Economic Pressures
Inflation and loss of livelihoods force many families to prioritize basic survival, often pushing children into informal labor instead of regular schooling.

Making a Difference

Our Approach

Children in Yangon face a compounding crisis: armed conflict, severe seasonal flooding, and recurring waterborne health emergencies have severely disrupted schooling. Remote learning is the primary delivery method due to safety constraints.

Remote learning offers a safe alternative to physical classrooms. Delivering it in Yangon requires specific adaptations to overcome rolling power outages and military internet restrictions. Empower Futurewave provides free remote English literacy classes to children in Yangon, ensuring education continues despite the crisis.

Working with local community partners, we have adapted our delivery model to account for the unique realities on the ground—scheduling around power availability, using low-bandwidth platforms, and building in flexible make-up sessions for students affected by flooding or illness. Our goal is to ensure that no child in Yangon loses access to education because of circumstances beyond their control.
